
I presently work as an SAP SCM consultant. I have worked on several service parts planning projects. However, I have done a good deal of research on service parts and maintenance organizations and think there are very large opportunities for improvement that really go beyond service parts planning, beyond SAP and move into new ways of thinking. The biggest opportunities are in applying very basic and inexpensive information technologies to service parts. I am not seeing the opportunities being taken advantage of. Service organizations always have tight budgets, however, these designs use software and services that are mostly free or have a nominal cost.
